G.I. JOE IDW #1 Python Patrol Re-color

Description

This is a recolored cover from G.I. Joe #1 (2009) from IDW Publishing. This particular art was done as a variant cover for Grahm Crackers comic books. The art it’s self was drawn by Robert Atkins. The coolest thing about this cover is that it was actually a tribute to Marvel Comic’s G.I. Joe #1 (1982). The cover art from that issue was penciled by Herb Trimpe and it included the Joe team in a very similar set of poses in front of a MOBAT tank. Mr. Atkins did a great job of recreating the feel of that cover, only this time the Joes we’re replace by members of Cobra Command in an almost mirror universe version of the classic Joe iconography. (As a side note, this is not the first time those roles have been swapped, the 2007 Joecon packaging art included a similar theme, with the Cobra characters from that years set.)

Now typically, I would recolor older art that I felt couldn’t hurt having an upgrade, but that’s clearly not the case with this cover. The original colors on this cover are outstanding. In fact overall the original cover is on of my favorites from the whole IDW run, and is one of my top dozen favorite covers of all time. So this one did not need to be recolored. I just really really wanted to, and as a huge fan of Python Patrol I thought this would be such an awesome alternate color scheme.

I know I’ve seen this color scheme for a Python Patrol Storm Shadow on a custom somewhere on the internet, I just can't remember where, but it was not my idea. Cobra Commander, Destro, and Baroness on the other hand I came up with on the fly. I would have like to have done something more colorful with the Baroness, but the original art was inked for her all black outfit, and it would have been difficult to make the changes needed to make her anything other then mostly black. That being said I’m pretty stoked about how she came out. The python in the Python Patrol logo is a modified version on the box art for the 2011 Joecon boxed set.

I am super thrilled with how this piece turned out and I’m really felling like I’m improving substantially with every new coloring project I work on.
